A therapy that is used primarily for the serious athlete who trains continuously. It includes pre-event,
inter-event, post-event and maintenance/training treatments that promote greater
athletic endurance and performance, lessen chances of injury and reduce recovery
time. During each phase of training, there are different goals for the athlete
and the therapist needs to have the training to help the athlete reach those
goals. The main differences in each phase are differences of timing, pace of the
massage, and duration of the massage session.
Sports massage includes assisted therapeutic stretching, myofascial release, neuromuscular release, lymphatic drainage, pin & stretch,
compressions, and focuses primarily on the muscles relevant to one's particular athletic activity.
Many people believe sports massage is the same as deep tissue, which is not
true.
